Mary C. Russell
Biography

Picture
Director/Screenwriter/Cinematographer

Mary C. Russell is a genre female film director, originally from the Bay Area but grew up a little differently than the average American girl. Moving to Singapore at eight years old as an expat. Currently now located in Los Angeles three years out of Columbia College Hollywood graduating in 2015 with a BFA majoring in directing.

Mary directed, wrote, and produced a horror slasher short film, “Carved,” last year that was screened at the NewFilmmakers LA film festival in 2015. Drawing inspiration from the 1971, “Vanishing Point,” and Tarantino’s “Death Proof.” It involves a soul of a satanic inmate that possesses innocent people on the road to Las Vegas. It was screened at the Days of the Dead: Los Angeles convention with Etheria Film Night 2016. "Carved," was picked up by the distribution company, Filmchella, in 2018! You can find it now, streaming on Amazon Prime.

She loves  screenwriting horror concepts, especially ones that will mess you up. “Give them pleasure the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare,” a favorite Hitchcock quote.  Mary has  worked in pre-production and development of scripts with dramas, horrors, thrillers, and science fiction. She regularly works as a film/television director and in the camera department.

What PEOPLE Are Saying

"Mary C. Russell could very well become an exciting force in the horror genre and beyond. With Carved she’s proved her talent and offers a glimmer of possibilities that her filmmaking could offer, incorporating not just typical genre signposts, but going beyond that with deceivingly present profundity and implications."
