Mary C. Russell is a genre female director of photography originally from the Bay Area but grew up a little differently than the average American girl. Moving to Singapore at ten years old as an expat. Currently now located on the West Coast, educated out of Columbia College Hollywood graduating in 2015 with a BFA majoring in directing.
Mary directed, wrote, and produced a horror slasher short film, “Carved,” that was screened at the NewFilmmakers LA film festival in 2015. Drawing inspiration from the 1971, “Vanishing Point,” and Tarantino’s “Death Proof.” It involves a soul of a satanic inmate that possesses innocent people on the road to Las Vegas. It was screened at the Days of the Dead: Los Angeles convention with Etheria Film Night 2016. "Carved," was picked up by Shudder and is now streaming on their service in 2022. She recently directed her first feature, "The Otherkind," a science fiction thriller, featured with Rue Morgue magazine to be released later this year.
She loves screenwriting horror concepts, especially ones that will mess you up. “Give them pleasure the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare,” a favorite Hitchcock quote. Mary has worked in pre-production and development of scripts with dramas, horrors, thrillers, and science fiction. She regularly works as a film/television director and in the camera department.
